Bulgaria to Hold Early Parliamentary Elections on April 19

Bulgarian President Elana Yotova announced on Wednesday that the country will hold early parliamentary elections on April 19. The previous government resigned on December 11 following weeks of street protests against its economic policies and perceived failure to combat corruption. Last week, Yotova appointed Andrei Georgiev, Deputy Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, to head a caretaker government tasked with preparing for another parliamentary election. This will be the eighth election in the country within just five years. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union and NATO.
